CBD for Burns - How effective is it?

Skin is the largest organ in the body and the body's first line of defense against pathogens. According to the data obtained from the World Health Organization, around half a million burn injuries occur in the United States, although the American Burn Association believe the figure is over one million.

The burns can be classified into 3 different types:

First - Degree: This is the least severe burn which affects the top layer of skin. Your skin will be red, painful to the touch, and possibly show mild swelling. Typical treatments include the application of a wet compress and covering the wound with a clean cloth.

Second - Degree: This type of burn affects the two top layers of skin. Symptoms include blisters, severe pain, and the possible loss of skin. Treatment involves immersion in cold water, elevation of the affected area, and making sure you don’t break any blisters.

Third - Degree: This is the most severe type of burn injury as it penetrates the thickness of your skin and destroys tissue. Immediate medical attention is required because third-degree burns can be fatal.

According to study the abundant distribution of cannabinoid receptors (CB1 & CB2) on skin nerve fibers and mast cells provides implications for an anti-inflammatory, anti - nociceptive action of cannabinoid receptor agonists and suggests their broad therapeutic potential. Therefore, both THC via CB1 receptors and CBD via the CB2 receptors can help reduce inflammation and pain in burn victims by weakening cortisol secretion and decreasing blood flow.

CBD can also help reduce scarring in burn victims. A recent study concludes that topical administration of CBD ointment, without any THC, is a safe and effective non-invasive alternative for improve the quality of life in patients with some skin disorders, especially on inflammatory background and cutaneous scars.

Although CBD is occasionally used to treat second-degree burns, it is unwise to use the cannabinoid for anything other than minor first-degree burns. It is imperative that you seek medical advice for any painful or severe burn or else you risk infection, or worse.
